I think it's kind of interesting that the article doesn't really comment on the reason for the shift. Maybe guys are just dumb (I won't disagree; we're pretty dumb), but I would like to think that it's not just that girls have greater aptitude, but that social factors aren't working very well for guys. I know I've read other stuff noting the recent disparity, though I can't remember if any were more insightful on causes.
I think that the article makes it clear that the root of all of this is the school system. The question is, why not change it? I believe that the fact of the matter is the school system is set up quite well for girls- not guys. Actually, the whole system does not recognize the uniqueness of each individual. However, to "descriminate" by gender, or even learning style would cause a couple billion lawsuits.
